Dannevirke

Continuing the perambulations through New Zealand by haiku, today’s focus is Dannevirke in the North Island.

Queensland readers will recognise Dannevirke as the birthplace of long-serving, highly conservative Premier, Joh Bjelke-Petersen, who moved to Australia with his family at about two years of age.

Like Carterton, which we visited yesterday, Dannevirke serves the local farming community andĀ produces milk and milk powder; timber; and more recently fertilizer products. The population of Dannevirke has remained reasonably stable, around 6000 people for the past sixty years.
